Step into the refined world of American Modernism with Charles Demuth’s magnificent late-period watercolor masterpiece, Pepper and Tomatoes (c. 1929). Painted during the pinnacle of his career while working from his family home in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, this exceptional still life captures the essence of Demuth's Precisionist philosophy—where the organic forms of nature are rendered with an almost architectural clarity and crystalline purity.

The composition is a delicate and beautiful study in form, volume, and saturated color. In the center rests an incredibly detailed, oversized red bell pepper, its glossy, undulating surface rendered with masterful washes of crimson, scarlet, and deep ruby red. Demuth frames this central element with two vibrant, plump red tomatoes, emphasizing their smooth contours against a softly draped, ice-blue or lavender-gray background cloth. Utilizing faint, exquisite graphite under-drawings and his signature "blotting" watercolor technique, Demuth allows the creamy white paper to shine through the paint, giving the entire arrangement a luminous, weightless quality.

The Artist: Charles Demuth (1883–1935)

Charles Demuth was a towering figure in American art history and a leading pioneer of Precisionism. Heavily influenced by the European Cubist works he encountered during his stays in Paris, Demuth returned to America to forge a uniquely domestic modern style. While famous for his towering industrial landscapes and poster portraits (such as I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold), it was in his private, delicate watercolors of fruits, vegetables, and flowers that he achieved his highest level of technical perfection. His still lifes are celebrated for treating humble kitchen garden produce with the geometric grace and reverence of high classical art.

Styling Your Space

This clean, elegant, and historically significant watercolor print brings a bright, sophisticated feel to a variety of interior designs:

  • Contemporary & Mid-Century Dining Rooms: Pairs beautifully above a sleek walnut buffet, marble counter, or blonde wood dining set, adding an intellectual touch of American design history.

  • A Refined Botanical Gallery Wall: Functions perfectly alongside clean line drawings, architectural sketches, or delicate watercolor flora, offering a bolder geometric punch than traditional botanical art.
