Bring a spectacular burst of mid-20th-century European whimsy, fashion, and character into your home with this magnificent 1927 French beverage poster by legendary graphic designer Leonetto Cappiello. Widely considered one of Cappiello's most elegant, delicate, and imaginative commercial designs, this vintage ad uses fantasy elements to perfectly summarize the warmth, craftsmanship, and luxury of the Monnet brand.
The composition centers around a highly stylized, ethereal wood nymph or bacchante leaping gracefully through the air. Dressed in a flowing, fringed vermilion-red sundress, she balances barefoot while delicately lifting a massive snifter filled with amber-toned brandy. In a stroke of pure advertising genius, a glowing, anthropomorphic sun leans down out of a wild swirl of golden hair to kiss the edge of her glass, visually answering the iconic slogan written across the lower margin: "...du soleil dans un verre..." (sunshine in a glass). Set against a pitch-black background, the brilliant yellows, fiery reds, and clean typography anchor a highly dynamic composition that commands any room it inhabits.
The History: "Sunshine in a Glass"
Founded in 1838, the house of J.G. Monnet & Co. was celebrated for creating incredibly smooth, high-grade cognacs. When they approached Leonetto Cappiello in the late 1927 marketing season, they wanted a graphic identity that moved away from dusty, old-fashioned cellars and emphasized pure enjoyment, warmth, and vitality. Cappiello responded with this solar fantasy theme. By framing the brand's name in bold, blocky gold lettering over a flat black background, he created a design so memorable it remained the defining international visual identity for Cognac Monnet for decades.
