Vintage Figure 5 in Gold Print by Charles Demuth, 1928

Overlapping golden-coloured fives and sharp geometric planes create a sense of speed in Charles Demuth’s I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold. Dark city tones make the repeated numerals stand out in this bold modernist composition.

About the artwork

Demuth’s 1928 painting pays tribute to William Carlos Williams’s poem The Great Figure, which describes a fire engine passing through city streets. This reproduction makes a striking focal point in a study or modern-art gallery wall.
