As a born and bred Glaswegian, the spirit of "The Glasgow Boys" has always been greatly endearing to me. They weren't all from Glasgow but they shared an attitude of rebellion amongst them that enabled them to paint how and what they wanted to paint, as opposed to trying to gain acceptance from the traditional art establishments. In doing so, I think they cumulatively captured part of the very essence of Glasgow and what it means (to me) to be a Glaswegian. (Ross)

Bring Scottish art into your everyday space

Celebrate an interest in Scottish painting with this reproduction of James Guthrie’s In the Orchard (1885). Its pastoral subject offers a connection with nineteenth-century outdoor life, making it an inviting choice for a living room, study or collection of Glasgow Boys prints. Choose it as a standalone artwork or build a display around artists whose work has a personal connection to Scotland.

About the artwork

Guthrie was a leading member of the Glasgow Boys, a group associated with exploring more natural ways of depicting people and places. In the Orchard gives this print a specific identity within that tradition, rather than offering an anonymous countryside subject. For admirers of late nineteenth-century painting, it provides a starting point for a collection centred on outdoor settings and everyday life.

A personal Scottish-art collection

Imagine the print above a low bookcase, with favourite Scottish books, warm wooden furniture and soft woven textiles bringing the surrounding space together. It can introduce a connection with an artist or place you value without requiring the whole room to follow a historical theme. The horizontal orientation offers an option for a wider section of wall or for balancing a gallery arrangement containing vertical pieces.

A smaller print can join an established collection, while a larger format can give the artwork a more prominent place. Pairing Guthrie with another Glasgow Boys artist creates a shared thread, while choosing several outdoor subjects can bring variety to a display. Measure the available wall space and consider nearby furniture before selecting the size that best suits your room.

Paper, printing and finish

This product is a reproduction, not an original 1885 painting. It is produced using giclée printing on 200gsm matte art paper, offering a matte paper surface for your chosen display. Select a print-only version to use your own frame, or choose a framed option with a black wooden frame and white mount.
