The 1800s were marked by a great diversity of artistic styles and movements, each reflecting the cultural, social, and political changes of the time.
Two of the most influential movements of the 19th century were Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Impressionist painters like Monet, Renoir, and Degas sought to capture fleeting moments and sensations in nature and urban life. They emphasized the play of light and color, often painting en plein air, or outside.
Post-Impressionists, such as Van Gogh, Cézanne, and Seurat, built on Impressionism's innovations, but took their art in new directions. They explored form and structure, using bright colours and bold, expressive brushstrokes to convey emotion and subjective experience.
Both movements challenged traditional artistic conventions and paved the way for the experimentation and innovation that characterized modern art in the 20th century.
